Cornel "Opp" Johnston, 60, of Davenport, Iowa, died Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. Thursday, October 27, 2011, at the Pentecostal Church of God, 1234 Ripley Street, Davenport. Funeral services will be Monday October 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at William C. Harris Funeral Home, 9825 Halls Ferry Road, St. Louis, MO. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis. Memorials may be made to Pentecostal Church of God. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting with arrangements.
Mr. Johnston was born in 1950 in St. Louis, MO to Owen H. and Alberta Johnston. He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On November 26, 1996, he married Esther Suvada Watts in St. Louis. He worked for Nichols Aluminum for 30 years. Cornel always thought it was an honor to praise the Lord and be with his church family. He loved life, family and his grandchildren. He enjoyed learning about current affairs, gardening, crossword puzzles, all sports and the St. Louis Cardinals in particular. He was known for going out of his way to help others.
Survivors include his wife, Esther; daughters, Audrey (Kisha) Humphries of Davenport and Ina Smith of St. Louis; son, DeCarlos Smith of Davenport; grandchildren, LaTisha (David) Griffin, Kisha Humphries Jr., Kimani Humphries, Keenan Humphries, Daliya Smith, Tiavianna Smith, Tysheonna Smith, Audreiona Smith, Keilani Kohliem, Raegan Kohliem, Morquan Kohliem, Deante Smith, Kashiana Wilson, Shyonda Smith, DeCarlos Smith III, Sharika Smith and Isaiah Smith; great-grandchild, Nariyah Griffin; mother, Alberta Johnston of St. Louis; sisters, Janie Johnston Redd and Alberta L. Johnston, both of St. Louis; brothers, Owen (Juanita) Johnston, Jr. of CA, Michael Johnston, Anthony (Jeanette) Johnston and Donald Johnston, all of St. Louis; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and his very close friend Stacey. He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Gregory Johnston.
